June 16, 2026 - Chevrolet Unveils 2027 Silverado with New V8s

This is the Telemetry Transportation Daily for June 16, 2026, and I'm Sam Abuelsamid, Vice President of Market Research for Telemetry.

For the Detroit-based automakers, full-size pickup trucks are crucial, since they sell in large numbers and are their most profitable products. Thus, it's important when they introduce a new generation of those products. Today, Chevrolet has taken the wraps off its 2027 Silverado 1500 light-duty trucks. GM spent billions on the development of an all-electric version that it hoped would sell in the hundreds of thousands, but ended up with much more modest sales. With the market failure of the Silverado EV, GM has now invested in a new generation of its small-block V8s that will power the new trucks.

The first of this new family of V8s debuted a few months ago for the 2027 Corvette with a displacement of 6.7 liters. For the trucks, the engine will be offered with either 5.7 or 6.6 liters, an increase from the previous 5.3 and 6.2-liter engines. An updated version of the base 2.7-liter turbocharged four and the 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel will also be offered. All the engines will now be paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission, replacing the former eight-speed. No performance details on the new engines have been released yet, although the V8s will likely produce more than the current 355 and 420 horsepower of the outgoing engines. Unlike Ford and Toyota, GM isn't offering any sort of hybrid option on its trucks or a power export feature like the Fords have.

The 2027 Silverado gets a redesigned exterior with crisper, more horizontal lines. The antennas and third brake lamp are now integrated into a bar at the trailing edge of the cab roof.  Inside, all trims get a 12.2-inch instrument cluster display and a 16.3-inch infotainment screen. The premium ZR2 and High Country models also get an 11.5-inch passenger display.  More details will be revealed in the coming months.

Thanks for listening.
