Study Details

It’s been nearly five decades since the auto industry began leveraging software and electronics to enable drivers to have better control of their vehicles under adverse or extreme conditions. From the first ABS deployed by German luxury brands in the late 1970s, the technology has evolved dramatically and what we now describe as advanced driver assistance systems or ADAS has become table stakes in the industry. The industry is rapidly moving on beyond lane departure warnings, adaptive cruise control and blindspot monitoring to systems that enable drivers to let go of the wheel and even start taking their eyes off the road. The actual safety efficacy of higher level assistive and automated driving remains a subject of debate, but the industry is moving forward.

By 2035, the vast majority of new vehicles are expected to offer at least hands-off driving assist while a growing percentage of the fleet will not require an active driver at all. As more sophisticated systems are adopted, it will in turn drive demand for more in-vehicle compute and sensing. This report examines the technologies being used, the risk factors and how much the market is projected to grow or shrink for each automation type from Level 1 to Level 4 based on the SAE J3016 definitions.
