July 23, 2026 - Mobileye Founder To Leave

This is the Telemetry Transportation Daily for July 23, 2026, and I'm Sam Abuelsamid, Vice President of Market Research for Telemetry. 

For much of the past two decades, Mobileye has been the global leader in providing advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS technologies, to the auto industry. Currently, there are more than 230 million vehicles on the road globally using Mobileye technology. That technology consists of two primary components: the EyeQ line of systems on chip and the corresponding software that runs exclusively on those chips.  

The company was founded in 1999 by Professor Amnon Shashua, and he has served as the company CEO since the beginning. During the company's second-quarter earnings call today, it was announced that Shashua would be stepping down from the CEO role and is expected to remain with the company as Chair of the Board. An exact date for the transition hasn't been announced, as the board will be hiring an executive search firm to find a successor.  Once that person has been identified, Shashua will step aside. 

No specific reasons have been cited for the transition, but Professor Shashua is 66 years old at the time of the announcement and has led Mobileye for 27 years. Despite being the leader in delivering ADAS technology to the industry, Mobileye has faced some challenges in recent years with new competition, particularly in China. As consumers in China have increasingly shifted from legacy Western brands to domestic brands in recent years, automakers that were Mobileye customers have been shifting to Chinese vendors like Horizon Robotics and Huawei or developing their own chips and software in-house, a problem that is also impacting Nvidia and Qualcomm. Nonetheless, Mobileye has been gaining new business with higher-margin, more advanced systems in the rest of the world. Earlier this week, Stellantis announced it would begin deploying Mobileye's enhanced ADAS that includes REM mapping support in 2027, and another as yet unnamed Detroit automaker would be launching the company's Surround ADAS product along with the VW group. Mobileye has also begun public user testing of its VW ID Buzz-based robotaxi in Hamburg, Germany, with a commercial launch in the U.S. in 2027.
