October 29, 2026 - Toyota Developing Even More Efficient Hybrid
This is the Telemetry Transportation Daily for October 29, 2026, and I'm Sam Abuelsamid, Vice President of Market Research for Telemetry.
Next year marks the 30th anniversary of Toyota launching the first modern hybrid electric vehicle with the debut of the original Prius. Today, electrified powertrain options have proliferated through virtually everything Toyota builds, except for sports cars, and even the upcoming GR GT will be a hybrid. Here in the U.S. market, hybrids account for 56% of Toyota sales through the first nine months of 2026, and most of those offer best-in-class fuel efficiency.
Toyota has just announced the development of a next-generation hybrid powertrain that has been rebuilt from the ground up to reduce cost, improve efficiency and enable it to be part of the automaker's multi-pathway powertrain roadmap. Rather than adapt existing engines as it has done until now, Toyota has developed a new compact 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine specifically for this hybrid application, and it will be available either naturally aspirated or turbocharged. The naturally aspirated version is intended to replace current 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 1.8-liter four-cylinder applications like the current Corolla. The turbocharged engine will probably replace the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter found in vehicles like the Camry and RAV4. The engine will be combined with a new hybrid drive unit with lighter, smaller motor generators and integrated power electronics.
The whole package will be smaller, allowing for lower hoodlines and better packaging in vehicles that offer hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric alternatives. The new Lexus ES is already offered as a hybrid or BEV, and the next-generation Corolla was shown as a BEV concept at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. A new, smaller hybrid package would enable Toyota to provide both options to customers. The new hybrid is targeted to get more than 15% better efficiency. Toyota hasn't said when the system will debut, but a next-generation Corolla could arrive by the end of 2027.
Thanks for listening.
