September 16, 2026 - More Robotaxi Problems for First Responders

This is the Telemetry Transportation Daily for September 16, 2026, and I'm Sam Abuelsamid, Vice President of Market Research for Telemetry. 


Tesla recently launched its purpose-built Cybercab into its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. The Cybercab, which was unveiled at an event in Los Angeles in 2024, is a two-seat coupe with no steering wheel, pedals, or gear selector. The only interface element is a central touchscreen. This may already be proving to be a problem for first responders. The Cybercab is one of two purpose-built robotaxi vehicles in operation in the U.S., the other being from Zoox, and that vehicle may have similar issues. 


Other robotaxis, such as the Jaguar, Zeekr, and soon Hyundai vehicles from Waymo, are all based on modified production vehicles and retain traditional control systems. When one of these vehicles is involved in a crash or comes upon an emergency situation, it's possible for first responders to contact the company's control center and have the automated driving system turned off so the vehicle can be moved. Even in a situation where the vehicle is without power, it's still possible to put it in neutral and roll it out of the way. The Cybercab and Zoox don't have this capability. In the Tesla, the only way to interact with the gear selection is through the screen, which may not be operative in the event of a crash. The Zoox has no centralized screen, and if the remote assistance agents can't release it, they would have to send out a support crew. The same is true for the Tesla. 


In an emergency situation, especially in a crowded city like Austin or Las Vegas, this could take an extended period of time, and that could make the situation much worse. While NHTSA has asked automated driving companies to respond to a query about emergency response, the agency currently seems more intent on making it easier to get these vehicles approved for public road use than actually ensuring that they are safe. 


While tremendous progress has been made on getting vehicles to drive themselves over the past two decades, there are still huge operational problems that need to be addressed before we should dramatically expand deployment.
