This is the Telemetry Transportation Daily for September 12, 2025 and I'm Sam Abuelsamid, Vice President of Market Research for Telemetry.
In one of the least surprising product announcements in recent memory, Stellantis has just announced that it is cancelling plans to build a full battery electric version of its Ram 1500 light duty pickup truck. The Ram 1500 REV was originally announced in spring 2023 with plans to launch production in late 2024. The original plan was to build two variants, a standard range with a 168-kWh battery and 350 miles of range and 229-kWh variant with 500 miles of range. However, by early 2024, it was increasingly apparent that the market for fully electric full-size pickup trucks just wasn't materializing as expected. The trucks were too expensive, too heavy and took too much of a range penalty when towing. After multiple delays, the REV was most recently scheduled to launch in mid-2027.
At the same time that the BEV pickup was announced, Ram also announced that it would produce an extended range EV or EREV version with the awkward name of Ram 1500 Ramcharger. This version would have a smaller 92-kWh battery for about 145 miles of range and a 3.6-liter V6 engine driving a generator to extend total range to nearly 700 miles. This version would also address the challenge of long distance towing. The Ramcharger was also delayed to early 2026 when Ram decided to bring a gas 5.7-liter V8 back to the lineup for model year 2026. The EREV version of the truck will still be produced, but it will now adopt the REV branding.
This product shift should prove to be more popular in the market place offering drivers the ability to go gas free for most daily driving while still having the convenience of quick fill ups on long towing trips, all with a lower cost than BEV version.
Thanks for listening.
