This is the Telemetry Transportation Daily for March 25, 2026, and I'm Sam Abuelsamid, Vice President of Market Research for Telemetry.
Nearly two weeks after Honda announced that it was cancelling its entire lineup of Honda and Acura electric vehicles, Sony Honda Mobility has officially announced that it is cancelling development and production of its planned Afeela 1 sedan and a follow-up crossover that was first shown as a concept at CES earlier this year.
The official cancellation of the Afeela vehicles was expected from the moment that Honda made its announcement, but Sony Honda Mobility made a statement at the time that no decision had been made. The Afeela vehicles were going to be produced at Honda's East Liberty, Ohio, assembly plant. While they were not based on the Honda EV platform, they did use major components from Honda, including the motors, batteries, and power electronics. With those components no longer being used by Honda, the much lower expected sales volumes of the Afeela vehicles would leave them with a much higher unit cost, assuming Honda even wanted to move forward with production of those components. The rest of the Afeela platform was unique to that vehicle with distinct electronics, software, and most other components. The Afeela vehicles were already going to be quite expensive with a starting price of $90,000, a range of only up to 300 miles, and relatively slow 150-kW charging. It was initially slated to go on sale in California only originally in late 2025, but that date was pushed to late 2026. With its bland design and uninspiring performance, the Afeela 1 was not expected to do well in the market, so the decision to cancel the program is unsurprising.
Thanks for listening.
