July 24, 2026 - Aurora Launches Next-Gen Autonomous Truck Platform

This is the Telemetry Transportation Daily for July 24, 2026, and I'm Sam Abuelsamid, Vice President of Market Research for Telemetry. 

Aurora Innovation, the Pittsburgh-based company co-founded by Chris Urmson, has just launched its next-generation Aurora Driver 2 platform.  When Aurora first began commercial deployments of its trucks in spring 2025, the trucks were equipped with what was effectively still prototype-grade hardware similar to what has been used for development. Aurora has had two parallel programs going for new hardware. One is the Driver 2 system that has updated sensors, sensor cleaning, wiring, and a compute platform that is now powered by dual Nvidia Thor processors. The upgraded system is now designed to be able to withstand the rigors of one million miles of use, which is the typical lifespan of a long-haul tractor. 

In addition to durability, the system offers improved performance and will now be deployed without on-board observers, as the initial batch of trucks still had. The Driver 2 system is being deployed on International LT and Volvo VNL Autonomous tractors. Volvo is installing the system line-side at its New River Valley factory in Virginia. Aurora has partnered with Roush to set up a facility to integrate the system on the International trucks. The Roush facility is expected to reach an annual run rate of 1,000 units by the end of 2026. 

Aurora has been steadily expanding its network to 10 routes since launching the initial Dallas-Houston route last year, and now regularly does the 1,000-mile trip from Fort Worth to Phoenix nonstop with its trucks. The plan is to expand across the entirety of the southern U.S. from Florida to California in the coming years. Since launching last year, Aurora trucks have completed 440,000 driverless miles, and they recently announced a contract to supply 500 trucks to Hirschbach Motor Lines.  Hirschbach will purchase and own the trucks and subscribe to Aurora's driver as a service, as well as back-end features for fleet management and deployment. 

The second program is a partnership with Aumovio to develop a true volume production version of the hardware kit that will be supplied to truck manufacturers for line fitting into new trucks, including those from Volvo and Paccar. The Aumovio kit is expected to launch in production in 2027.
