This is the Telemetry Transportation Daily for April 15, 2026, and I'm Sam Abuelsamid, Vice President of Market Research for Telemetry.
Barely a week after Volkswagen announced that it would end production of the ID4 electric crossover in Tennessee, it has unveiled a heavily revamped version of the ID3 in Europe. The ID3 and ID4, along with several other VW EVs, all use the same MEB architecture. The only real difference between these two models is that the ID3 is a Golf-sized hatchback while the ID4 is a taller, Tiguan-sized crossover.
When these products launched several years ago, the powertrains got decent reviews, but the biggest issues were complaints about the interiors and software. VW made the choice to cut costs in some strange ways, including only having two window switches on the driver's door, plus another switch to choose between front or rear windows. They also relied on touch control surfaces to manage volume and climate functions and had a software platform that was buggy and slow.
Starting with the ID3 Neo, as it is now known, the interior is completely revamped and like the recently revealed ID2 Polo, it has made a full return to physical controls. There are now individual switches for all windows, and discrete buttons on the steering wheel and the dashboard. Across the board, the materials and finishes now appear to be more premium, and there is a larger 10.25-inch instrument cluster display that provides more data to the driver. The driver assist features have also been upgraded, including the Connected Travel Assist, which has traffic-light recognition, and there is full one-pedal driving capability. The propulsion system has also been upgraded for better efficiency and performance. Some variants will get over 390 miles on a charge from a 79-kWh battery on the WLTP cycle, which would still be well over 320 miles on the EPA cycle. VW has said the U.S. will get future updates of the ID4, although where it will be produced is still unknown. With the same changes made to the ID3 Neo, it could do significantly better in the market.
Thanks for listening,
